Aspire. Believe. Achieve.

I've always been passionate about sport, fitness and training, and began weight training in 1978 when I was 10 years old. My father, now 80 years of age, who still weight trains, was a PE teacher and had free-weights and other training equipment in our garage; he introduced me to them and I learned the value of strength training and regular exercise. I continued to train with him throughout my teenage years to get fit and strong, as well as for athletics, other sports and general health. I eventually completed a sports undergraduate degree in 1991, followed by a PGCE in Physical Education in 1996.

This passion has led to 25 years experience teaching and lecturing in strength and conditioning, sport and exercise science and physical education within schools, further and higher education in the UK and abroad, as well as coaching athletes and clients from a variety of populations and cultures to achieve their fitness and performance-related goals. As an athlete, I'm a pro natural powerlifter; I started competing in 1994 and have represented my country 24 times (from 1997- present) becoming an 8 x world champion, as well as winning multiple Welsh, British, European, Commonwealth and Olympia Pro titles. I'm currently number one in the world for the deadlift on the all-time single lift rankings list for all federations in the U100kg weight class (masters 50-54yrs). These experiences offer insights to students that cannot be gained from academic study alone.

I continue to undertake professional development, and founded Advanced Fitness Education UK in 2009, which through various guises, has sought to help aspiring fitness professionals achieve their goals, through inspired education and support.
